Mar. 4th, 2022 11:57 amThree years ago, JMS republished "Sorceress," after I got the rights back! This is the short story that's the prequel, or rather the first installment, in the Magician world - where we first meet Lorre and Lily and Lily's eventual husband Will. (It's m/f, but with bi main characters.)
Without this, Magician wouldn't exist, though I already knew when writing that the sequel was Lorre's story, it was m/m (more or less; Lorre can shapeshift), and the person who'd be the absolute best match for him was a stubborn, honest, loyal, kindhearted prince, someone who'd look at people and determinedly choose to see the good in them. (He can't carry a tune, but no one's perfect.) It's the book I wrote two scenes of, ten years ago, and stopped. (And then went back to, and finished in a sort of wild hurricane of writing, last year...)
(Both those scenes, mostly unaltered other than weaving them into their spots, are in the final published version. One's about halfway through: the conversation about faces. The other is the ending - not the Gareth POV bonus story, but the conversation they have that ends the main story.)

Perhaps it's time to work on the third (final? in my head it is, for now) story. Which is Merry's story, set about twenty years later. (It opens with Merry asking Uncle Gareth for advice.) And if you've read the first two, you might have picked up a little story-seed or two, about both her romance (f/f) and the magic nobody thinks she inherited...
(Also a little secret dream of mine is to write a world that other people want to play in, like Mercedes Lackey did with the Valdemar anthologies, so I have this weird little fantasy that, after I write the third one, I can be all, "hey, writer-friends! want to contribute to a shared-world Tales from Averene anthology? want to actually tell that story about what happened to the obnoxious prince Lorre kicked off his island early on, or the story about Miss Kaya the schoolteacher getting over her crush on Gareth and finding love with the village midwife? or the accidental magic left in Lorre's favorite coat, which he lost fifty years ago? and also I'd probably contribute with either an early Lorre story for fun, in which he's still the arrogant Grand Sorcerer and not really evil but kind of a selfish and very powerful jerk, or else the whole 'Gareth's brother's finally getting married and now Lorre's going to experience the full rustic & enthusiastic Mountain Marches Wedding Party Day' story, which exists in my head already anyway." What ideas and stories do YOU all have?)
