“Snails” is very much a homage to classic pulp sword-and-sorcery - it’s (I hope) very Robert Howard, Fritz Leiber, early Barbara Hambly inspired - only, you know, much more LGBTQ and romance! Along with the swords and sorcery!
It’s got:
~a swordsman for hire, who is really just a Large Nice Boy with many muscles and a kind heart
~his genderfluid half-fairy magical partner, with a Mysterious Past
~giant snails
~ “we’re sleeping together but we’ve never really talked about that and I’m kind of scared to bring it up because I DEFINITELY HAVE FEELINGS”
~fun with medieval literature jokes/references/names
~did I mention giant snails?

This is the story I keep describing to people as “basically they’re actors filming Master & Commander but even more gay!” Which means…
~actors (gay and bi) falling in love while filming a gay Napoleonic War-era love story!
~lesbian, pan, and trans (and ace, in later books) side characters!
~slow-burn mutual pining!
~very much resolved sexual tension (at last!)
~lots of food/food-related puns!
~the purposeful opposite of the “bury your gays” trope!
~the most meaningful boot-removal scene I’ve ever written!
~a playlist that includes both Bruce Springsteen AND B*witched! (For the record, Colby’s the B*witched fan, though about five days after he was singing “C’est la Vie” in the kitchen, Jason’s folding laundry and starts randomly humming: “Say you will, say you won’t, say you’ll do what I don’t…say you’re true, say to me–DAMMIT COLBY WHY.”)
I hope you love Jason and Colby and random conversations about wizards and pastries and history and bread puns and love stories as much as I do!

I am super (heh) excited about this one - you all know how much I love these boys. And this story has been through a few iterations. In fact, let me explain…
There’s the version on AO3, which was my original draft (and which I’ll likely be taking down in early September, pre-publication, just FYI, if you want to save that one).
Then there’s the version in the Less Than Three Press anthology Happiness in Numbers, which had a significant number of changes: some that absolutely were for the better, establishing some world-building earlier, clarifying ages and timelines, etc - but also some that I was a bit sad about (the whole delicious m/m/m superpowered sex scene had to be cut to fit the anthology’s overall rating, for one). And then LT3 went out of business. (Hence the lack of link to this version.)
But!
My other publisher, JMS Books, will now be publishing Sundown (and the sequel)! And THIS version is what you can think of as the Author’s Preferred Version - I put my sex scene back (yay!) and did some more polishing around it, but I also kept some of the changes we’d made in the LT3 version, especially in the early establishing bits and scene breaks.
So this one’s the version I’m absolutely most happy with - if you buy one, buy this one! Neither of the others is exactly the same as this one, after all! And this one’s the Final Proper Preferred Version! Plus you get lovely cover art! *throws confetti*
